Land use/land cover dynamics, trade-offs and implications on tropical inland shallow lakes’ ecosystems’ management: Case of Lake Malombe, Malawi

چکیده
Lake Malombe supports various ecosystem services (ESs). However, it is increasingly experiencing human-induced pressure. This study used geospatial, household surveys, focus group discussion, key informant interviews, consultative meetings, and field observation on assessing the Land use/Land cover dynamics (LULCD), its trade-offs, implications ESs. The findings demonstrated a decrease in forest land (52,932 ha to 78,983 ha) at expense of cultivated settlements (7054 17,595 ha). Changes ecological indicators such as fishery, river flow, soil erosion, turbidity, biodiversity, invasion alien species, scenic beauty, extinction some frequent flooding, cultural value, carbon sequestration were significantly (p-<0.05) linked LULCD classes. are significant policymakers, managers, local population, stakeholders understanding conflicting interests policy priorities balance lake restoration human welfare.

Quantifying sample biases of inland lake sampling programs in relation to lake surface area and land use/cover.
We quantified potential biases associated with lakes monitored using non-probability based sampling by six state agencies in the USA (Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, and New Hampshire). To identify biases, we compared state-monitored lakes to a census population of lakes derived from the National Hydrography Dataset. We then estimated the probability of lakes being sampled using general...
متن کاملEutrophication and recovery in experimental lakes: implications for lake management.
Combinations of phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon were added to several small lakes in northwestern Ontario, Canada, at rates similar to those in many culturally eutrophied lakes. Phosphate and nitrate caused rapid eutrophication. A similar result was obtained with phosphate, ammonia, and sucrose, but recovery was almost immediate when phosphate additions only were discontinued. When two basins ...
متن کاملDynamics of Land-use and Land-cover Change in Tropical Regions
■ Abstract We highlight the complexity of land-use/cover change and propose a framework for a more general understanding of the issue, with emphasis on tropical regions. The review summarizes recent estimates on changes in cropland, agricultural intensification, tropical deforestation, pasture expansion, and urbanization and identifies the still unmeasured land-cover changes. Climate-driven lan...
متن کاملSpatial identification of critical nutrient loads of large shallow lakes: Implications for Lake Taihu (China).
Ongoing eutrophication frequently causes toxic phytoplankton blooms. This induces huge worldwide challenges for drinking water quality, food security and public health. Of crucial importance in avoiding and reducing blooms is to determine the maximum nutrient load ecosystems can absorb, while remaining in a good ecological state. These so called critical nutrient loads for lakes depend on the s...
متن کاملTrade-Offs in Multi-Purpose Land Use under Land Degradation
Land provides a host of ecosystem services, of which the provisioning services are often considered paramount. As the demand for agricultural products multiplies, other ecosystem services are being degraded or lost entirely. Finding a sustainable trade-off between food production and one or more of other ecosystem services, given the variety of stakeholders, is a matter of optimizing land use i...
